- The lady at the Kenwood McDonald's drive-thru who sometimes hands me an afternoon diet coke and straw and says with a big big smile, "Here you are honey....have a blessed day!" Sometimes she comments on what I am wearing, sometimes she comments on the weather, but she always says "have a blessed day." I am always uplifted by her cheer, and am disppointed when she isn't there.
- The scientists who developed the flu vaccine. While it didn't work for me this year, it has for many years in the past, and works for most people. Now that I see how miserable the flu can be, I'm grateful for all the times it does work, and believe my symptoms are far milder as a result of the vaccines. In the old days, there were pandemics and many people died. Get a flu shot every year!
- Those noble Japanese workers who have been working around the clock to try to contain the nuclear leaks. They will likely have shortened lives as a result, but they did it for the good of their country and the world.
- The men and women who come every single Monday to pick up all the stinky, oozy garbage we go through in a week. My beat up mailbox is a small price to pay for this sanitary service!
- Neighbors who pick up our paper when we are too lazy to pick it up from the end of the driveway in the morning......when I see it at my doorstep, I know it found its way there by Cindy or Margo or John or someone else walking by.
- People who use facebook for the simple joy of connecting with others they know....not to see how many "friends" they can amass or to get us to buy things that benefit them personally

My Remedy for being Sick and Tired
I am literally sick and tired today, but also figuratively sick and tired as I listen to all the gloom and doom on the news, aren't you???? As I just lie around pondering, my thougts have turned to people who either directly or indirectly have an impact on my quality of life, but do not receive accolades. Going to list a few that are top of mind, and if you are by some accident reading this post, I encourage you to make your own list. I plan to make this an onging list as it is an excellent antidote to the doldrums.

This reminds me of a "Thanksgiving Blessings" piece my students write for their families. We start by thinking of things we are NOT thankful for... homework, taking out the garbage, an annoying little brother. Then we turn it into a blessing... for example:
ReplyDeleteI am thankful for my annoying little brother... because it means that I am never lonely.
Here are some for adults:
I am thankful for:
...the spot I find at the far end of the parking lot because it means I am capable of walking.
...the mess I have to clean up after a party because it means I have been surrounded by friends.
...the taxes that I pay because it means that I am employed.
...the clothes that fit a little too snug because it means I have enough to eat.
...a lawn that needs mowing, windows that need cleaning and gutters that need fixing because it means I have a home.
The two Wolves
ReplyDeleteOne evening an old Cherokee told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside people.
He said, "My son, the battle is between two wolves inside us all.
"One is Evil - It is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.
"The other is Good - It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith."
The grandson then asked his grandfather: "Which wolf wins?"
The old Cherokee simply replied, "The one you feed."
